2022 Okavango Delta Photo Workshop

bythom INT Africa Bots ChobeSavuti 7-2017 D500 28579

Dates: April 7 to April 19, 2022

Short Description: This workshop starts in Maun, Botswana and travels through several parts of the Okavango Delta and adjoining area. Unlike many Botswana trips, we're targeting a special time of the year, just after the rains end, when the animals tend to be very active. We first travel to a remote tented camp in the Moremi Reserve, where we use our Land Cruisers to explore the area for three days. Next, we hop on a flat-bottomed boat for a ride up the river delta itself to the luxury Camp Okavango, where we spend our time exploring the area by water and foot. A short plane ride then takes us to Savuti, which is part of Chobe National Park and just outside the delta. Here we again use a remote tented camp as our home while exploring one of Botswana's premiere savanna for several days. Finally, we move our tented camp to the Khwai River, where we experience what happens in one of the more reliably "wet" areas for several days. From there, we return you to the Maun, Botswana airport for flights home.

While rhinos are a rarity in this region, you'll likely encounter pretty much everything else sub-Sahara Africa has to offer on this workshop. We only put three students in each of our three vehicles, so there's generally plenty of room for your gear. Every vehicle has a very experienced driver guide, and Thom will be in the front seat of one vehicle, and Tony Medici (Thom's teaching assistant) will be in another. In other words, you'll have excellent help both photographically as well as in spotting and identifying animals and birds throughout most of this workshop. We travel with laptops, projector and screen on this trip, so even in our downtime Thom and Tony are teaching pretty much every day. This isn't a short workshop with a photo tour afterwards. It's a full-on multi-week workshop.

Cost: Africa is not inexpensive. We provide first class food, lodging, and facilities throughout, as well as top-level instruction and guiding. US$13,995, plus US$195 in park entrance fees and US$575 in internal flight costs. Please note that these are 2020 prices; I was able to get vendors to agree to honor the price of the original COVID-cancelled workshop. If I were to offer this same trip again, prices will be almost 20% higher.

Other: This workshop is limited to nine students.
