Nikon User Suggestions

Real users, real improvement and product ideas.

To submit a suggestion, send an email here. When I first started publishing my Nikon Wait List (see front page of site) many of the comments that came in were not 100% mainstream things that we are all waiting upon, but fell into what I felt was more suggestions for improving or advancing the Nikon products. Rather than let those comments fall by the wayside, I decided to start another page where I'll publish them, in hopes that someone at Nikon decides to put some of these on their to-do list.

4/10/2010: out of nearly 200 suggestions, Nikon has so far implemented 5.

Camera Features:

  • Auto ISO on/off assignable to a button (Command dial then changes min shutter speed?) (jb, am)
  • Auto ISO shutter speed/focal length dependency (min shutter speed = 1/fl for FX 1/fl*1.5 for DX) (js)
  • User cancellable Auto ISO in Manual exposure mode (da)
  • Manual selection of ISO above Auto ISO max should override Auto ISO (da)
  • With Auto ISO make it dependent upon focal length (ad)
  • Dedicated ISO button (or ability to assign it to an assignable button) (rg)
  • Set the clock from the GP-1 if connected. (jc) [Now implemented starting D3s]
  • Sunrise/Sunset calculation (from GPS) (pa)
  • Search function to find items in deep menus (mc)
  • Delete an image even if zoomed (e.g. Del key hit twice while zoomed) (mc)
  • Ability to upload a small text file to the camera and pull it up on the color LCD. Suggested by a wedding photographer as a way to keep shot lists. [I'd add that it really should be a ToDo file: you should be able to put a check mark next to any individual line of text.] (mo)
  • Firmware updates to allow bracketing in steps larger than 1. (nw)
  • Store and edit camera settings files on a PC (ah) [We sort of have that with Camera Control Pro]
  • Combine SHOOTING and CUSTOM SETTINGS banks (many) [I'm not so sure about just combining them, but I do want the option to combine them, so that the camera can be completely set in one selection]
  • Save/Load SHOOTING bank settings, Save/Load CUSTOM SETTINGS bank settings (sg)
  • Lock SHOOTING/CUSTOM SETTINGS banks (ke)
  • Save/Load banks to named files on card (ke)
  • Restore settings from settings file made with previous firmware (th)
  • Restore to Saved settings option (not default) (sg)
  • Restore to Saved after time period (sg) [could also be Restore to Saved on On/Off]
  • High/Low DOF limits for current settings in viewfinder/info screen. Also, set hyperfocal button, set infinity button. (jc)
  • Pressing AE-L in Manual exposure does nothing now, should do "quick set" to 0 (via Program). (jc)
  • Reconsider and make more standard the button positions on all cameras (cm, others)
  • Add "temporary P A S or M mode" via assignable button held down (fh)
  • Trap focus as a setting, not a group of settings. (jc)
  • Instead of focus confirmation in the data area below the viewfinder, it should be part of the autofocus sensor itself in the main image area (different color when focused?) (ps)
  • Improve contrast detection AF speed (cw)
  • NEF+TIFF shooting (!) (th)
  • HDR support (many) [Comes in many forms, but the most common request is three-image bracket 2 stops apart; also in-camera HDR assembly to JPEG ala Pentax K7]
  • HDR support: spot meter dark/bright, camera calculates exposures necessary (ms)
  • Integrated meter and sensor for HDR. Essentially use metering to determine where to do early read and reset on sensor pixels to create HDR data. (lk)
  • M-UP allows Self Timer (many), M-UP has always up (tm)
  • Less Live View mirror clanking (many)
  • Better DX viewfinders (several)
  • PSAM in Custom Setting or Shooting banks (am)
  • Limit Program exposure mode to subset of available apertures (js)
  • Scriptable Program or exposure modes (pa)
  • Set hyperfocal distance (eg)
  • Trap focus that works with MF lenses (al)
  • AF area selector lights when focus achieved manually under it (ke)
  • Use differential between contrast and phase detect AF to automatically set Auto Fine Tune (jh)
  • Better screens for manual focusing (many)
  • User-definable Programs for Program exposure mode (eg)
  • Reset to a user-definable state (cs)
  • AF button + dial changes AF mode (ka)
  • Ability to change aperture while in DOF preview (da)
  • Depth of field bracketing (cm)
  • Focus bracketing (ms)
  • 2 and 3 stop bracketing (many)
  • Scene luminance map (ms) [Simply resurrecting the old F5 "live view" from the metering sensor might be enough]
  • Brightness range indicator (ms) [Measure low and high points in scene]
  • Aperture/Shutter speed range limits (ms) [e.g. set aperture between f/2.8 and f/5.6. This requires a second function which is how to favor the request, e.g. Prefer High Limit, Prefer Low Limit. Also, when combined in Program exposure mode: Vary X first, vary Y second, vary Z third where XYZ can be aperture, shutter speed, and ISO]
  • Focus bracketing (g)
  • Get strap lugs positioned so camera hangs properly (ka)
  • Panorama assist mode (ka)
  • Built-in WiFi (ah)
  • Built-in Bluetooth to load/save settings, use audio headset, integrate with GPS (dg)

  • Accurate raw data histograms (UniWB) (many)
  • Select JPEG or raw histogram (ms)
  • Blink channel histogram when blown (ms)
  • Select size of area for highlights measurement (many) [a single pixel blown is different than a 10x10 pixel area]
  • Real DSLR Color Space (sRGB, AdobeRGB too small) (lk)
  • User selectable hiding of less-used menu items (fh)
  • D300 CompactFlash door opens unintentionally too often; needs a lock release (ala D3) (fk)
  • Fix the SCM (AF mode) focus switch so that it can't easily be jarred to a different position (many)
  • D300 needs a dedicated bracketing button (cw)
  • Fast frame rate at 14-bits (D300, D700) (several) [This is one of those gain some, lose some scenarios. I'd just suggest you use 12-bit on those cameras if you need fast frame rate.]
  • Better viewfinder (many) [Seems to be some disagreement on what that means: brighter, 100% always, and better manual focus assist are the three most common suggestions]
  • New keep mirror up for continuous shooting mode (focus, exposure locks to first frame) (ka)
  • More viewfinder screen options (tr)
  • Swivel LCD (many) [most don't like D5000 swivel position]

Lenses:

First, let's get some obvious stuff out of the way. We need to fill out the DX line and update a number of outdated lenses in the lineup. Basically we take the current 50 AF lens lineup, add three lenses (one of the back), and then perform 12 updates to make the line reasonably complete and current:

  • 16mm f/2.8G DX (or other wider DX prime)
  • 50-150mm f/2.8G VR AF-S DX
  • Redo 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm primes (G, AF-S, Nano)
  • Redo 85mm f/1.4 (G, AF-S, Nano, VR)
  • Redo 105mm and/or 135mm DC (G, AF-S, Nano, VR)
  • Redo 17-35mm f/2.8 (G, AF-S, Nano)
  • Redo 24-120mm f/3.5-4.5G VR (better optics)
  • Redo 200mm Micro-Nikkor (G, AF-S, Nano, VR)
  • Redo 300mm f/4 (add VR, Nano)
  • Redo 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D (G, add AF-S, Nano)

Okay, with the obvious out of the way, time for your user input.

  • make all PC-E lenses so tilt and shift can be same axis or different axis (many)
  • 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 AF-S lens update. (gv) [Actually, why not just reintroduce it?]
  • 24-200mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S lens for FX. (bl)
  • 35-135mm (suggestions ranging from f/2 to f/4). (various)
  • 180mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor (replaces both 200mm f/4 and 180mm f/2.8). (jc)
  • Galen's favorite 20mm f/4 refreshed. (kh) [Any small, very wide prime would be nice]
  • A DX portrait lens: 60mm f/1.4G (ab)
  • Redo 85mm f/1.8 (G, AF-S) (kh)
  • 135mm f/2.8 (G, AF-S, VR) (kh)
  • 400 f/5.6 (G, AF-S, VR) (kh)
  • 14mm or 16mm PC-E DX (er)
  • 16-35mm Fisheye FX UW (underwater use) (cb)
  • affordable DX primes (jw)
  • 18-70mm DX with macro (jw)
  • 70mm f/2 DX (ms)
  • Sharper corners for 14mm redesign, less distortion (ms)

Cameras:

Likewise, before we get to new camera suggestions, we need to get some obvious things out of the way first:

  • D3000 to replace the D40 (10 or 12mp sensor, simpler than D5000 but similar framework).
  • D3s (make the buffer upgrade permanent, add sensor cleaner, minor tweaks)
  • D700x (put the D3x sensor in the D700 body, add sensor cleaner and video)

I've already expressed some specific camera desires, so I'll kick off the additions to the lineup ideas:

  • APS sensor compact. Oly's taken the interchangeable route, Nikon should just do one really good integrated lens compact with a large sensor. Make the Digital Era 28Ti (it can have a modest zoom)
  • FM3D. FM3a body, D300 or D700 sensor, no extraneous features. Requires four or five MF primes, though.
  • D3DX. You convinced me. D3 body, D300 sensor. There's enough demand for this to be the flagship of the DX line.

Now for your ideas:

  • F7 [!] -- film body with D3 focusing/electronics. (sc)
  • Small FX body (many) [you'll need to give up some features to get FX cameras below the current D700 size, I think. The shutter box, viewfinder, and flash define a particular minimum size in terms of height and depth.]
  • Inexpensive FX body (many) [I put this in the world of too-much-wishful thinking. While I'm sure that prices will slowly drift down on DSLRs from where they are now, producing an FX sensor is still exponentially more expensive than producing an equivalent DX sensor. So if you're expecting a US$999 FX body with D90-like features, you can also expect a sub-US$499 DX body at the same level. Cost elasticity of demand says the DX body would still vastly outsell the FX body in that case. So which one would you make first if you were Nikon?]
  • Digital FE/FM -- AI capable, top shutter speed dial (i.e. no command dials), split viewfinder (rb)
  • Use the D3 sensor tech in a DX body, even if it's only 6mp (many)
  • 12mp DX with screwdrive but D40-like (ms)
  • 15-18mp DX camera (nk)
